The Band
********
ALIGHT are a new alternative rock 4 piece from the Bucks town of Aylesbury, UK.
Forming in the Autumn of 2008, they forged a strong relationship of positive like-minds and created their high energy brand of alternative rock born of melodic, powerful guitar lines and intricate rhythms fronted by intense vocal performances.
They have been racking up a string of local and other gigs, as well as continuing to write and record, with their debut single being released in April 2010.
The single comprises of two tracks, “Eyes Aflame” and “Warm Wreckage” and was produced by Adrienne Aiken, (who’s pop credits include the likes of The Hoosiers and Trevor Horn, and classically, opera diva Leslie Garrett and The English National Opera Orchestra) and it was mixed by Simon Gogerly (U2, Placebo, Gwen Stefani, NDubz, the list goes on…) and this feisty combination has seen the band develop in musical direction as well as mature as writer/performers.
In keeping with the bands drive and unrelenting ambition, they will be playing a series of gigs in the London, Oxford and Reading areas to support there debut single release in the Spring and are lining up slots on the 2010 festival scene to feed a growing and some say "glowing" reputation.
Lead Vocals - Michael Navarro
****************************
Aside from performing, Michael finds solace in any of his creative pursuits. Whether using a paint brush and pencil on various illustrations, some of which adorn the ALIGHT’s Myspace, or penning lyrics and writing poems, expression through creativity is where he feels most at peace in his life.
That was nearly taken away in a near fatal car accident, which subsequently, and partly in a bid to exorcise the memories, formed the lyric and inspiration behind the song 'Warm Wreckage'.
In the wake of that chapter of his life, Michael spent some of his time travelling in various countries including the United States and Australia to, as he puts it "experience as much as my senses will allow" and he feels this is his continued stimulus for songwriting.
Guitars – Ross Walton
*********************
Ross, began playing guitar when he was just 15. He gained experience playing in covers bands, and during the past 5 years has performed at many key venues as well as on the local festival circuit.
In his late teens, Ross was asked to sign to a top London modeling agency, but Ross opted for his first passion over modeling, that of his music career, though he probably wouldn't turn down the offer to burn the lens in a photoshoot with Kate Moss!
Ross has studied various traditional and modern martial arts, with Gracie Jujitsu being the one he trained most for to raise his level of fitness and skills to take gradings. These disciplines led him to discover Japanese and Chinese philosophies including Buddhism, which inspired the thinking behind the name, ALIGHT, alluding to the nature of enlightenment and positive energy.
Ross's passion for the music he writes and plays is coupled with a great understanding of marketing and business development which adds a strong dynamic and professionalism to the band.
Bass – Marko
*************
Marko was raised around music from an early age care of his father, who had played guitar in a chart-successful disco band in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He therefore was exposed to everything from Motown, Funk, Disco, Soul, R'n'B and Reggae before settling for Rock himself.
His first early integration into music was on keyboards, then he tried guitar (at just 14, he secretly played his dad's guitars) and then drums, but it wasn’t until he began jamming with his friend Karl that he realized his niche was the bass.
On meeting vocalist Michael, another friend of Karl’s, they began to form the nucleus of something interesting, and through an advert up in the local music shop for a guitarist, ALIGHT was born.
Drums – Karl Walker
*******************
After studying basic drum rhythms at 15, Karl jumped straight behind the kit in a punk pop trio, laying down the speed.
He went out and gigged most teen filled venues with a bass drum packed full of glow sticks. Though it was his playing regularly, not the glow sticks, that gave Karl the skills for some serious chops on the drums. He still lacked intricacy, so progressed to a garage band with the intent of learning how to fit tricky beats into the dark indie pop melodies provided by his new band members.
This band isolated themselves locking the door and throwing away the key which gave Karl the chance to hook into the bass licks of Marko, developing some instant musical chemistry. This was the foundation for bigger things of course, and ALIGHT became the band he was waiting for. |
